Colombia's Leader Declares 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' if United States Invades.

President Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have turned up the volume of their exchange, increasing tensions between the two countries after US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs cocaine mills and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Accusations

Talking to journalists on Sunday, the American leader suggested similar military action against Colombia, asserting the nation is also "very ill" and “run by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and trafficking it to the US."

While Colombia is the leading source of the narcotic, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the business.

A Frayed Partnership

This nation was historically a close partner of Washington in the fight against narcotics trade and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, but relations have deteriorated significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions including the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters demobilised following a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Firm Answer

When asked if military intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, firmly denied the accusations. "I am no illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he stated.

"He comments without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a post.

"Should American forces attack peasants, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And should they arrest me, whom a significant portion of the population holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Leader

Petro spent some years as a young man as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting the nation's constitution in 1991 and later became a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch a gun ... but in defense of my country I will take up arms again," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister announced that Petro's protection team had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, but voices from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the threats of American military action on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Pressure

The US withdrew his travel authorization following he urged US troops to refuse unlawful commands. In October, the US enacted financial sanctions targeting Petro, his wife and various associates.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and striking suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations against vessels in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
